Every all-clear product looks about the same in a demo. Start a timer, walk the branch, confirm, and if the timer runs out somebody gets notified. The differences don't show up in the demo. They show up on the one morning something actually goes wrong, and they come down to a handful of minutes. Here's a scenario worth measuring your own solution against.
The morning, and the math
A teller opens a branch alone. Before she gets out of the car she starts the All-Clear procedure in the SafeStatus app, with a seven minute window she set for this location through SafeSignal. Walk the branch, check the back rooms, tap the confirmation, done. On a normal morning the procedure closes quietly.
Now run the bad version. Someone is waiting inside. The first thing they do is take her phone.
Two options, and both have a problem
Count what she has left. Most all-clear products give an employee exactly two ways to signal trouble. The first is a panic button inside the phone app. Maybe she gets to it. That option assumes the phone is in her hand or within reach, and that going for it won't make the situation worse. With her phone sitting on the counter across the room, it's gone entirely.
The second is the timer itself. If no all-clear comes in, the system fires a duress alert when the window runs out. That safety net matters, and it's the reason timers exist. But do the math. She was confronted in the first minute. The signal goes out at minute seven. For six of those minutes, nobody outside the building has any idea something is wrong.
Seven minutes earlier
This is the gap a wearable closes. Her SmartBadge looks like the ID holder she wears every shift. The panic button sits on the back of it, so she can press it at her side, without looking down, without a screen, without any gesture the person across the room would notice. The badge pairs to her phone over Bluetooth, and the phone that was taken from her and dropped on the counter is still doing its job from across the room. The press lands as a duress event with her location, and it lands now, at minute one, not when the timer finally gives up on her.
Responders also see it for what it is. A duress press is not an ambiguous timeout that might be a false alarm. It says clearly that a person signaled for help, which changes how everyone treats the next ten minutes. Most systems can't offer this at all, because everything they do runs through the timer or the phone. When the phone is gone, there's nothing left to press.
The signal is half the product
What happens after the press is the other half. The duress event lands in the Crisis Manager Inbox, which becomes the command point. Notification is sent immediately to others standing by including key staff at corporate while unrelated branches stay quiet. Delivery can use AMBER Alert style notifications that cut through Do Not Disturb, because a duress alert that sits silenced during a meeting wasn't really delivered.
If the event is real, the same platform sends a cast to nearby branches or the whole market: hold your openings, stay clear of the area, wait for an update. That message travels over text, voice, push, email, and desktop at once, on the same engine the organization already uses every day. One press escalates into a coordinated response without anyone stopping to figure out which tool comes next.
The record examiners actually want
Afterward, the file already exists. Timer started, duress pressed at 7:53, acknowledged at 7:54, cast sent at 7:56, resolved, every step timestamped. Opening and closing procedures at financial institutions carry expectations under the Bank Protection Act, and examiners want evidence that procedures run in practice, not just on paper. A timeline like this is that evidence, and nobody spent an afternoon rebuilding it from texts and memory. Does your all-clear measure up?
Five questions to put to whatever you're using today, or to any vendor you're evaluating:
- If an employee's phone is taken in the first minute, how does a duress signal get out before the timer expires?
- Can responders tell a deliberate duress press from a plain timeout?
- Will the alert break through Do Not Disturb on a responder's phone at 7:58 a.m.?
- Once the signal is in, can the same system warn nearby branches on every channel at once?
- Can you hand an examiner the full timeline afterward without reconstructing it by hand?
If the honest answer to the first question is "it can't," then your protection starts when the timer ends, and the most dangerous minutes of the morning are uncovered. Run the scenario as a drill at one branch and see for yourself. The timer is the easy part. The minutes before it expires are the ones worth paying for.
